Silicones & Adhesives

Silicones
Silicones are most commonly used as sealants and cannot be painted. They are highly elastic at low temperatures and remain virtually unchanged up to temperatures of 200 degrees, whilst continue to resist moisture and weathering. Bonds made with silicones can only be subjected to relatively small mechanical loads.

There are three types of silicones:

Mastics: Used to seal around your window and door frames to prevent leaks which could lead to rot.

Roof and gutter sealants: Used to repair small cracks in asphalt roofs and plastic gutters.

Silicone sealants: Used to create a waterproof seal around bathroom appliances.

Adhesives
Adhesives are used to described a fixing substance such as a glue or cement. A good adhesive can improve a products durability, flexibility and quality. Specific adhesives can be used as a different function:

PVA (Polyvinyl adhesive): used for general-purpose as well as wood and building adhesives. Looks white but dries transparent and most are waterproof.

Rubber-based contact adhesives: used to fasten synthetic laminates to wood, man-made boards and plaster.

Epoxy resin adhesives (two-part adhesives): used to stick most metals, ceramics, stones, glass and rigid plastics to materials like wood and glass, great for joints that have to remain waterproof. Toxic in powder form.

Flooring adhesives (rubber resin adhesives): used to stick floor coverings to floors.

Tile/coving adhesives (synthetic latex adhesives): used to fill gaps and to fix expanded polystyrene ceiling tiles, plasterboard and floor tiles.
